Special Sessions

General information

Special sessions are aimed at gathering contributions on a specific subject or scientific area and creating a networking opportunity to allow researchers working on similar topics to get together, learn about each other’s work and exchange ideas.

Delegates willing to organize a Special Session dedicated to a specific topic are invited to contact the AIDAA 2021 organizing committee at info@aidaa2021.it.

Instructions for the authors

Please indicate clearly in your abstract that it is intended for a Special Session by placing the following text in large type (e.g., 12 points) immediately above the paper’s title:
“Abstract for the Special Session on [TITLE OF THE SPECIAL SESSION]”

After submitting through the Congress’ website, please send a copy of the abstract to the Session’s e-mail address as specified in the Special Session section.

Abstracts that are not selected for the Special Session will be considered for inclusion in another part of the technical program by the Scientific Committee.

Special Session #1: Stratospheric Balloons

title

Scientific and Technological Research with Stratospheric Balloons –
Ricerca scientifica e tecnologica con palloni stratosferici

Session Chairs:
Dr. Marta Albano (ASI – Italian Space Agency)
Dr. Angela Volpe (ASI – Italian Space Agency)

In this session the topics are:

– Scientific experiments for balloon systems
– Payloads for technological validation
– Innovation of the flight chain technologies
– National and International projects

Description

Balloon borne instruments are suitable for a wide range of science fields, such as atmospheric measurements, climate and environment related investigations, astronomy and astrophysics, space instruments validation and testing of new technologies. Balloons have unique scientific measurement capabilities providing a unique way of accessing the different atmospheric layers. In fact, they provide a slow and stable movement which allows to obtain atmospheric measurements with an excellent resolution. The very stable flight is particularly advantageous for the long-term observations of astronomical objects and the short life cycle allow to use the economic balloon platform for the technological validation and calibration of satellite instruments. The session will be aimed at presenting national and international projects and initiatives related to the stratospheric activities. A focus on the international project HEMERA, which is funded in the frame of Horizon2020, will also be presented.

Special Session #2: DEVISU Project

title

DEVISU: DEvelopment and applications of a VIrtual hybrid platform for multiscale analysis of advanced StructUres of aircraft

In this session the topics are:

– Acoustics
– Multi-scale mechanics
– Control
– Non-classical mechanics
– Composite structures
– Surrogate modelling

Description

DEVISU is an Italian project supported by the Ministry of University and Research under the PRIN programme 2017. Coordinated by Politecnico di Torino, it involves Politecnico di Milano, University of Naples Federico II, University of Padua, University of Palermo, and University of Udine. DEVISU deals with failure of composite structures and noise/vibration reduction, along with investigation of new materials for aerospace applications. DEVISU will results into an integrated multi-disciplinary (structure mechanics, acoustics, control), multi-fidelity (classical and nonlocal mechanics, advanced theories of structures), multi-scale (from micro-mechanics to global/local analysis of complex structural assemblies) and hybrid approach together with its software tool implementation for the reliable, efficient and computationally effective simulation of aircraft structures. The session will be aimed at presenting the project contributions of the DEVISU partners. However, contributions from other participants on inherent topics are also welcome.

Special Session #3: ASCenSIon Project

title

Advancing Space Access Capabilities

In this session the topics are:

– Propulsion systems
– Upper stages
– Reusable launch vehicles (RLVs)
– Access to space
– Guidance
– Navigation and Control
– Recovery strategies
– Propellants and green propellants
– Reliability and safe disposal re-entry
– Mission analysis

Description

With the space sector rapidly changing, also the access-to-space market is undergoing a big transition. New companies are coming into the market and the pressure and competition for Europe is intensifying. The need for sustainability is clear and solutions such as reusable launch systems, green propellants, dedicated orbital injection and safe disposal is intensifying. In parallel, the need for a new class of space scientists, who are both excellent specialists and have a thorough understanding for the complexity, multidisciplinary and internationality of launcher development is evident. The session will present international researches and projects ongoing in the field of access to space. A special focus will be on ASCenSIon Project, an Innovative Training Network funded in the frame of Horizon 2020, whose Consortium counts 24 partners who aim at contributing to the establishment of a sustainable space access for Europe, with an open eye to the market and customers’ needs.
